Types of Anxiety Disorders We Treat in Columbus
From constant worry that won't turn off, to panic attacks, to a persistent dread in social situations — we treat the full spectrum of anxiety disorders. Recognizing the symptoms of anxiety is the first step toward getting help, and each type of anxiety disorder presents differently.
Generalized Anxiety (GAD)
Excessive, uncontrollable worry about everyday life — work, health, relationships, money — even when there's no specific trigger. Anxiety symptoms like these are among the most common symptoms of anxiety disorders we see at our practice.
- ●Muscle tension and chronic fatigue
- ●Sleep disruption from racing thoughts
- ●Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- ●Irritability that feels out of proportion
Panic Disorder
Sudden, intense episodes of overwhelming fear with physical symptoms so severe they can feel like a heart attack. Panic attacks are treatable.
- ●Racing heart, chest pain, shortness of breath
- ●Derealization — feeling detached from reality
- ●Fear of "going crazy" or dying during an attack
- ●Avoidance of places where attacks have occurred
Social Anxiety & High-Functioning Anxiety
Intense fear of judgment or embarrassment in social situations. High-functioning anxiety often hides behind achievement and overachievement.
- ●Rehearsing conversations obsessively beforehand
- ●Replaying interactions after for mistakes
- ●Perfectionism driven by fear of failure
- ●Appears "fine" outwardly while suffering internally
Our Anxiety Treatment Approach:
Medication + Therapy Combined
Anxiety is not weakness or worry — it's a dysregulation of the brain's threat-detection system. The amygdala fires at perceived threats as if they were physical dangers. Effective treatment for anxiety calms that response down so you can actually use the coping strategies that talk therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy teach.
As an anxiety treatment center in Columbus, our PMHNPs provide medication management and work closely with therapists to ensure a coordinated treatment program. We don't just prescribe — we monitor, adjust, and partner with you long-term to address your anxiety disorder symptoms.
SSRIs & SNRIs (First-Line)
Sertraline, Escitalopram, Venlafaxine — reduce baseline anxiety over 2-4 weeks. These are the gold standard for GAD and panic disorder.
Buspirone
Non-habit-forming option for GAD. Works over weeks, effective for chronic background anxiety without sedation or dependence risk.
Beta-Blockers (Situational)
Propranolol for performance anxiety — presentations, exams, social events. Reduces physical symptoms like trembling and rapid heartbeat as needed.
GeneSight Genetic Testing
Pharmacogenomic testing to identify which medications your genetic profile will metabolize most effectively — reducing trial and error.

Frequently Asked Questions About Anxiety Treatment
What anxiety disorders do you treat?
We treat Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Agoraphobia, Separation Anxiety, and high-functioning anxiety. We also treat anxiety that co-occurs with depression, ADHD, or PTSD.
Will I need to take medication forever?
Not necessarily. Many patients use medication for 12-24 months while building coping skills through therapy, then successfully taper off under our supervision. Others do better with long-term maintenance. We discuss your goals at every visit.
Is anxiety treatment available via telehealth?
Yes. We provide anxiety evaluations and ongoing medication management via telehealth for all Ohio residents. Most anxiety medications do not require in-person visits for prescribing.
What's the difference between anxiety and an anxiety disorder?
Situational anxiety — feeling nervous before a presentation or a stressful event — is normal. An anxiety disorder is when symptoms of anxiety are persistent, disproportionate to the trigger, and interfere with daily functioning. If anxiety is limiting your life, seeking treatment for anxiety is worth it.
Do you treat anxiety with therapy alone?
We are a psychiatric practice focused on medication management, evaluation, and diagnosis. We work closely with therapists and can provide referrals to therapists specializing in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), DBT, and other forms of talk therapy for anxiety. Medication combined with therapy as part of a structured treatment program produces the best outcomes for most anxiety disorders.
You don't have to white-knuckle it.
Anxiety is highly treatable. Most patients see significant relief within 4-8 weeks of starting treatment.
