Insomnia Treatment at Our Columbus Sleep Clinic

Insomnia is rarely just about sleep. In most psychiatric patients, poor sleep is a symptom — not the root problem. Our sleep medicine approach goes beyond surface-level fixes to treat the underlying cause. Whether you have trouble falling asleep, can't stay asleep, or keep waking up too early, we provide diagnosis and treatment for a range of sleep disorders in Central Ohio.

Chronic Insomnia

Sleep difficulties occurring at least 3 nights per week for 3+ months. Often involves difficulty falling asleep, an inability to stay asleep, or waking up too early — even with adequate time in bed. Poor sleep habits and lifestyle changes alone may not resolve chronic insomnia without professional treatment.

  • Lying awake for 30+ minutes before falling asleep
  • Waking multiple times and struggling to return to sleep
  • Daytime fatigue, cognitive impairment, mood problems

Psychiatric-Related Insomnia

Anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and ADHD all severely disrupt sleep. Treating the underlying mental health condition often dramatically improves sleep quality.

  • Anxiety: racing thoughts, hyperarousal preventing sleep
  • PTSD: nightmares, hypervigilance, fear of sleeping
  • Depression: oversleeping or early-morning awakening
  • ADHD: difficulty winding down, delayed sleep phase

Effects of Insomnia on Mental Health

Chronic sleep deprivation worsens every mental health condition. Poor sleep and mental health create a vicious cycle — each making the other worse.

  • Amplifies anxiety and depressive symptoms
  • Impairs medication response and therapy effectiveness
  • Increases risk of psychiatric hospitalization
  • Severely impacts work, relationships, and quality of life

Sleep Medicine Treatment Options
at Our Columbus Sleep Disorders Center

We don't just prescribe a sleep medication and send you home. Our providers conduct a thorough evaluation to understand what's driving your insomnia — whether it's anxiety, depression, PTSD, circadian rhythm disruption, medication effects, or a combination. When conditions such as sleep apnea or narcolepsy are suspected, we can coordinate a sleep study referral and work alongside your sleep specialist. Patients who snore heavily or experience daytime sleepiness may benefit from additional evaluation at a dedicated sleep disorders center.

CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia) is the gold-standard first-line treatment for chronic insomnia and works better long-term than sleep medications. We coordinate with CBT-I trained therapists and manage medications alongside that process when needed. Many patients with co-occurring mental health disorders find that addressing both sleep and psychiatric symptoms together produces the strongest results.

CBT-I Coordination

Gold-standard insomnia treatment. We coordinate with CBT-I therapists and can refer to certified providers in Central Ohio.

Sleep Medications (Non-Habit-Forming Priority)

Trazodone, mirtazapine, hydroxyzine, Rozerem — we prioritize non-addictive options and use benzodiazepine receptor agonists (Ambien, Lunesta) only short-term when clinically appropriate.

Prazosin for PTSD Nightmares

For PTSD-related sleep disruption and nightmares, prazosin has strong evidence and is a VA/DoD guideline-recommended option.

Treating the Underlying Mental Health Disorder

Treating the anxiety, depression, PTSD, or bipolar disorder driving your insomnia often produces dramatic improvements in sleep quality — better than sleep medication alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our treatment services in Columbus, Ohio.

Do you treat insomnia in Columbus, Ohio?

Yes. We evaluate and treat chronic insomnia and sleep disorders in Columbus and statewide via telehealth. We focus on understanding what's driving your insomnia — whether it's anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADHD, or circadian disruption — and creating a personalized treatment plan accordingly.

What is CBT-I and do you offer it?

CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia) is the gold-standard first-line treatment for chronic insomnia — more effective long-term than sleep medications. As a psychiatric practice, we manage medications and coordinate with CBT-I trained therapists. We can provide referrals to certified CBT-I providers in Central Ohio.

What sleep medications do you prescribe?

We prioritize non-habit-forming options: trazodone, mirtazapine (also treats depression), hydroxyzine (also treats anxiety), and Rozerem (melatonin receptor agonist). For PTSD nightmares specifically, prazosin is highly effective. We use benzodiazepine receptor agonists like Ambien or Lunesta only short-term when clinically appropriate, with a plan to taper.

My insomnia started when my anxiety got worse. Is that related?

Absolutely — and this is very common. Anxiety is one of the leading drivers of insomnia. Racing thoughts, hyperarousal, and worry at bedtime all keep the nervous system too activated to fall asleep. Treating the anxiety often dramatically improves sleep quality, sometimes without needing any dedicated sleep medication.

Can I get insomnia treatment via telehealth in Ohio?

Yes. We serve all of Ohio via our secure telehealth platform. Sleep consultations and ongoing medication management can be conducted via video. Most insomnia medications do not require in-person visits.

Good sleep is not a luxury.

Chronic insomnia treatment works. Most patients see significant improvement within 4-8 weeks with the right approach.
