PTSD Treatment for Trauma and Mental Health Disorder in Columbus

Trauma changes the nervous system. PTSD is a recognized mental health condition — not a sign of weakness — caused by a normal brain trying to protect you from perceived ongoing danger. We treat the full spectrum of trauma-related conditions. Symptoms of PTSD can include flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and emotional numbness that interfere with daily life.

PTSD (Single-Event Trauma)

Develops after a discrete traumatic event — assault, accident, medical trauma, combat, or witnessing violence. Anyone can develop PTSD after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event.

  • Intrusive flashbacks or nightmares
  • Hypervigilance and exaggerated startle response
  • Emotional numbing and detachment
  • Avoidance of trauma reminders

Complex PTSD (C-PTSD)

Develops from prolonged or repeated trauma — childhood abuse, domestic violence, neglect, long-term medical illness. More pervasive effects on identity and relationships.

  • Chronic shame and negative self-perception
  • Difficulty trusting others or forming relationships
  • Dissociation and emotional dysregulation
  • Feeling permanently damaged or different

Military & First Responder Trauma

We serve veterans, active duty military, police, firefighters, and EMS personnel who have experienced occupational trauma. We accept Tricare East and Optum VA.

  • Combat exposure and moral injury
  • Occupational trauma (line-of-duty incidents)
  • Transition stress from military to civilian life
  • Tricare East and VA community care accepted
Our Approach

Behavioral Therapy & Treatment
for PTSD at Our Columbus Center

Every provider at Real Psychiatric Services practices trauma-informed care — meaning we understand that trauma and PTSD affect behavior, self-perception, and relationships in ways that go far beyond anxiety. We never pathologize survival strategies. As a PTSD treatment center, we offer treatment options that combine cognitive behavioral therapy with targeted medication management.

Our team includes providers with specialized trauma training including Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) certification. We understand that how care is delivered matters as much as what treatment is prescribed. Anyone can develop PTSD after a traumatic event — our PTSD treatment program is designed to meet each patient at the appropriate level of care through regular therapy sessions.

SSRIs / SNRIs for PTSD

Sertraline and Paroxetine are FDA-approved for PTSD. Venlafaxine is also widely used. These reduce hyperarousal, intrusions, and avoidance symptoms.

Prazosin for Nightmares

Prazosin (an alpha-blocker) is highly effective specifically for trauma nightmares and is a first-line recommendation in VA/DoD PTSD guidelines.

Sleep & Hyperarousal Management

Trazodone, hydroxyzine, and low-dose quetiapine can help regulate the hyperarousal and sleep disruption that are hallmarks of PTSD — without dependency risk.

Therapy Coordination (EMDR / CPT)

Medication reduces symptom severity so trauma-focused therapies like EMDR and CPT can be more effective. We coordinate actively with your therapist.

Frequently Asked Questions About PTSD Treatment

Do I need to talk about my trauma in detail to get treatment?

No. You don't need to recount traumatic events in detail during your psychiatric evaluation. We gather enough context to understand your symptoms and develop a treatment plan — but we follow your lead on what you share and when.

Do you treat veterans and first responders?

Yes. We accept Tricare East and Optum VA (VA Community Care). We have providers with experience treating military trauma, moral injury, and occupational trauma. We understand the culture and don't pathologize service.

Is PTSD treatment available via telehealth?

Yes, for most patients. Telehealth can feel safer for people dealing with PTSD who find leaving home difficult or who have trauma related to medical settings. All telehealth sessions are conducted via HIPAA-compliant video. Our mental health providers offer flexible treatment options to match your needs and level of care.

What's the difference between PTSD and C-PTSD?

PTSD typically follows a discrete traumatic event. Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) develops from prolonged, repeated trauma — often in childhood or in abusive relationships. C-PTSD involves additional symptoms around self-identity, shame, and relational difficulties that go beyond standard PTSD. Both are treatable, but the approach is tailored accordingly.

Can medication really help with PTSD?

Yes — significantly. Medication won't erase the memory, but it can reduce the intensity of flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and emotional reactivity enough that you can engage with life and therapy sessions more effectively. Sertraline and prazosin in particular have strong evidence bases for symptoms of PTSD. Combined with cognitive behavioral therapy, medication is a cornerstone of effective treatment for PTSD.

Healing is not linear.
But it is possible.

If you are struggling with PTSD, our providers meet you exactly where you are — without judgment, without pressure. You set the pace.
